Shikakai (Acacia concinna) are a fruit of a tree growing in India and used traditionally for hair care. It is a mild, naturally low pH shampoo. It doesn`t strip hair of natural oils and usually no conditioner is needed. Shikakai's pods contain saponins, which produce lather when mixed with water and shaken.
How to use: Let it soak for a few hours, before applying the shikakai to soak up the excess oil and cleanse the scalp.
Those who use the tea method often stand in the shower to apply the mixture, leave it on only for a few minutes and rinse it out quickly. To mix the paste, stir a few tablespoons of shikakai into enough cold or hot water to form a paste. The mixture should be fairly thin, especially if it is being applied to dry hair. Shikakai can also be mixed with other traditional natural hair care ingredients such as neem, lemon juice, yoghurt, herbal tisanes, amla, fenugreek (methi), cassia and henna.
Hair feels shinier and softer after a shikakai wash.
